Letter To Faculty

Public Act no. 08-157

January 16, 2009

To The Goodwin College Community,

This letter is to inform all faculty and staff of a public act concerning security protocol at colleges and universities. The new law, enacted by the State and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened, is listed below.

Public Act no. 08-157

Section 1 (new) Effective July 1, 2008. Each constituent unit of the state system of higher education and each independent college or university, as defined as in Section 10a-37 of the General Statutes, shall submit a plan described in this section to the Department of Higher Education by January 1, 2009. Such plan shall identify procedures specifically designed to heighten awareness by all faculty and staff regarding potential at-risk students and other individuals on campus through effective education strategies. Such procedures shall be designed to educate faculty and staff on how to recognize and respond to students and such other individuals who may be at risk of harm to themselves or others. Approved June 12, 2008.

Janet Jefford, Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness, in consultation with Dr. Hank Lerner, a licensed professional counselor, and Tyesha Wood and David Zoppoli, counselors in our Advising and Counseling Center, prepared this policy and procedures to comply with Public Act no. 08-157. This policy identifies procedures specifically designed to heighten awareness by all faculty and staff regarding potentially at-risk students and other individuals on the Goodwin College campus. The full text of the first version of the policy, dated January 16, 2009, is available at the following website:

From that site there is also a link to sections from a booklet published by the Counseling Center at Trinity University entitled, "Recognizing and Helping Students in Distress: A Guide for Faculty & Staff to Assist Students in Need at Trinity." Trinity has graciously given us permission to use their guide as a resource.

This policy will be frequently revised and updated. These procedures remind us that maintaining campus safety is a community activity and that if we see behavior or conditions regarding potentially at risk students and other individuals on campus, faculty and staff should report such conditions to Campus Security, the Vice President for Academic Affairs or the Advising and Counseling Center.

Bryant Harrell, Vice President for Information Technology and Facilities, (860) 727-7656

Judy Zimmerman, Vice President for Academic Affairs (860) 727-6714

Tyesha Wood, Academic Advisor and Counselor (860) 727-6716

David Zoppoli, Career Counselor (860) 727- 6768

In an emergency – extension 555

Thank you for taking the time to review this policy and remember that Administration is making every effort to enhance your experience at Goodwin College.

Sincerely,

Janet Jefford

Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness
