1. What are the hours for the Goodwin Library?

Monday - Thursday

7 a.m.-8 p.m.

Friday

7 a.m.-6 p.m.

Saturday

9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Sunday

12 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.


The staff may be available for additional hours with advance notice. Holiday schedules are different. Changes in the schedule are posted in the library, on the bulletin board in the education building, and on this website.

2. Where in the library can I preview VHS and DVD movies?

The VHS player can be reserved for viewing in the Annex (back room of the library). The Annex can also be reserved for group study.


3. Do I have a Goodwin E-mail Account?

YES YOU DO! If your name is John Jones, your email account would be: jjones@student.goodwin.edu


4. If I bring my laptop to the library, can I print using the library's printers?

Depending on your laptop, all you will have to do is add our printer. If you have problems with this ask for help. Wireless connection is available in all parts of the library.


5. Which computers have Word, Excel and the other Microsoft programs?

All of the computers in library have the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Microsoft Office Suite is available for sale at significantly reduce prices for Goodwin students. Check in the education office.


6. I've got a citation to a journal article. How do I know if I can get that journal in this library?

A list of the journals, magazines, and newspaper subscriptions for Goodwin Library is available in the library. You can search for the journal article from home using our library webpage "Find Articles - Databases" link. Each database has a Source list that you can check when you are using the database. We have printed out some of these database source lists for frequently used databases. That is available on the large study table in the periodical room.


7. Can I get the library's databases from home?

Yes. The Goodwin Library Virtual Private Network (VPN) will give you access off campus to the catalog and the databases you need for research. Instructions for setting up your computer are on the Goodwin library home page. If you have any difficulties connecting, please 1) call or email the library staff or 2) call the help desk at #237.

8. How do I know if the library owns a particular book?

Books that are owned by the Goodwin Library are in the Goodwin Catalog online, part of the state wide catalog, ReQuest. See the link "Find Books- Catalog" on the library web page. If you know the exact title of the book, you can make a Title search. If you know who wrote the book, you can make an Author search. If you want to know what books there are on a certain topic, you can make a Subject or Keyword search.


9. Can I use the library's Video Collection?

If you are a currently enrolled student, you can check out a video for 2 days, no renewals. If the video has been placed on reserve by an instructor, it can usually be viewed only in the library. A video list is available in the library. Videos and DVDs may be borrowed from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. The normal time for this is 7 to 10 days.


10. The book I want is checked out. Can it be held for me when it comes back?

Yes. You may place a hold on the book at the circulation desk


11. How can I check out a book?

If you are a currently enrolled student or a graduate student of Goodwin College, you may check out a book for two weeks. The book my be renewed for an additional two weeks under most circumstances. Reference books and materials on reserve do not circulate.


12. Where are the copy machines?

There is one coin operated copy machine in the library. Each page is ten cents for students. Change for coins and dollar bills is available.


13. Can I use floppy disks in the library?

Yes, but we recommend using jump drives (also called thumb drives) because they are much more reliable (NO LOST RESEARCH PAPERS OR LAB REPORTS!) A $20 jump drive holds the equivalent of 30 floppy disks.


14. I need a computer. Can Goodwin College help me?

Yes. Goodwin College has an agreement with Dell Computers. You may purchase a Dell computer with a Goodwin College discount. Contact the Information Technology department for more information. We also have an agreement with Microsoft whereby you can purchase Microsoft Office 2003 Professional here for a discounted price.


15. Is there reference help available?

The librarians and library assistant are available to help you in person, by phone, or with email. Instructors also schedule classes in the library to prepare you for specific research assignments.
