Riverfront Expansion: Growing for the Future
After years of planning
and investment, along with the financial
backing of NewAlliance Bank, Goodwin
College’s River Campus began to take
shape on the banks of the Connecticut
River in 2007. Ground was broken in June
for the flagship building — a six-story
complex that includes classrooms,
administrative offices, a library, and a
700-seat auditorium. By November, the
steel frame of the 109,000 square foot
building was complete, with the
remainder set to be completed by fall
2008. Other buildings will follow in the
multi-year project — among them, an
early childhood learning center, a
student center, residence halls, and
dining facilities.
The expansion of Goodwin College
facilities and relocation to the
riverfront corresponds with the
college’s plans to add baccalaureate
programs and residential housing options
for students.
Also in 2007, with the help of a grant
from the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the
college cleaned up the riverfront and
began the restoration of a large-vessel
dock at the new campus site. Plans call
for the creation of walking trails and
parks on Goodwin College’s riverfront
property for the enjoyment of both
students and residents.
Meanwhile, the college has purchased
several residential properties near the
new campus location and has cleaned
blighted neighborhood properties in an
effort to renew the area for the benefit
of students and residents alike. |
